European rail carrier Eurostar suffered multiple breakdowns over the weekend due to weather and has announced that service has been suspended.

Eurostar said it would not operate service on Monday after the malfunction of trains over the weekend stranded thousands of passengers traveling between France and England.

According to reports, five trains broke down in the Channel Tunnel simultaneously on Friday. Trains also broke down on Saturday, forcing a suspension of Sunday service.

Multiple trains broke down because snow accumulated on power cars while in France, then melted while trains were in the tunnel. The melting snow damaged electrical equipment, said Eurostar.

Eurostar said passengers can claim a refund or change their booking for free through their original point of sale up to two months after the original date of travel.

For customers who have been unable to travel over the last few days, Eurostar said it will cover the cost of out-of pocket expenses such as hotels and taxis.
