Huge Fire at Miami International Airport
A fire started in the fuel area of Miami International Airport. Flames shot into the air and smoke billowed skyward. More than 30 fire crews were brought in to the disaster, and the flames were finally extinguished at 1:30 AM.
When the smoke cleared, investigators reported more than 40% of the airports fuel had been lost in the inferno.
Flights are affected. Travelers are encouraged to contact their airline if their travel itinerary involves Miami International Airport. On Thursday, 179 flights were cancelled, with more delayed. MIA is the second busiest US airport for international travel and the effects were felt throughout South America.
American Airlines was the worst hit, since it operates 70 percent of the flights out of MIA. The flight cancellations and delays are more than double that of a few months ago, when heavy snowstorms swept the nation and stranded passengers.
Spokesmen for American and MIA said Thursday it was unclear when flights at the airport will be back to normal. As MIA is the second busiest airport in the country for international flights, the delays and cancellations were affecting passengers across South and Central America as well as the United States.

Tankers have been brought in to shuttle fuel from the remote part of the airport to planes- resulting in huge delays.
The cause of the fire is unknown. Investigators are working to determine the cause. It is suspected that a faulty electronic switch underneath the fuel tanks is responsible.
There were no injuries reported. The fire occurred in an area away from passengers and employees of Miami International Airport.
